Duke (4-1) enters this rivalry game against North Carolina (3-2) as 3.5-point favorites at home. The Blue Devils lean heavily on Nate Sheppard and the offensive line to move the ball on the ground, a fact Bill Belichick will certainly be aware of.
Sheppard has been one of the best running backs in college football, rushing for the fourth-most yards in the nation (743) while averaging 6.3 yards per carry. Sheppard has scored 11 total touchdowns this season, recording two or more in four of his first five games.
North Carolina is the complete opposite. Belichick's team has struggled to run the ball this season, averaging only 3.9 yards per carry through five games. Instead, the Tar Heels lean on Billy Edwards Jr. to push the ball down the field through the air, and the result has been feast or famine. Edwards has passed for 1,069 yards (213.8 yards per game), eight touchdowns, and five interceptions.
More than half of Edwards' completions this season have gone to two players, Jordan Shipp and Jelani Thurman. If Duke is able to slow down these two pass-catchers, North Carolina will be hoping that the run game can finally find a spark. or it could get ugly in Durham.
