The New York Giants were slaughtered by the eager Los Angeles Rams on Monday night - in more than just one way.
this article was published before the updated reporting regarding the potential for Jaxson Dart to miss the entire season.
While the Giants lost 28-6 on the scoreboard, they also lost several key players throughout the game, though none of the injuries seemed particularly serious.
Quarterback Jaxson Dart, wide receiver Malik Nabers, EDGE Brian Burns, and offensive tackle Andrew Thomas were all banged up in SoFi Stadium.
Dart's injury looked the most concerning in real time. Less than five minutes into the game, he was sandwiched by two defenders and saw his knee buckle inwards as Josaiah Stewart's body weight fell on it. Dart was grasping at his knee on the field for several seconds before managing to walk off the field under his own power.
The second-year QB is believed to have suffered a sprained MCL, which is about the best outcome Dart could've had when looking at the replay of the injury.
"He's going to be OK," general manager Joe Schoen said during halftime, per ESPN. He'll miss some time, and he'll get more clarity after his scheduled MRI on Tuesday, but it sounds like Dart will return at some point in the near future.
UPDATE: NFL's Ian Rapoport has now reported that Dart's knee injury is more serious than initially anticipated and he is in risk of missing the rest of the season.
If Dart is indeed due for a season-ending surgery, Jameis Winston is the only other quarterback listed on the Giants' depth chart. Third-year man Jake Haener is on the practice squad - he played in eight games, and started once, for the Saints in 2024.
Nabers, who missed most of last year with a torn ACL, was injured in the second quarter when he went up to try and snag a pass. After cornerback Trent McDuffie batted the ball away, Nabers immediately grabbed at his right shoulder and was attended to by trainers for several minutes.
However, the third-year receiver returned to action in the second quarter and eased the sinking feeling for Giants fans. "My shoulder is OK," Nabers said postgame. "I'm going to get an X-ray on it to see what's going on." He also said that his shoulder popped out, but he eventually popped it back in before returning to the field.
In the final minutes of the blowout, top pass-rusher Burns couldn't put any weight on his leg as he left the field after suffering a low ankle sprain, per head coach John Harbaugh. According to ESPN, he left the stadium in a boot and took a golf cart to the team buses. He may miss a week or two, but a low sprain is much easier to recover from than a high ankle sprain.
"It eased my mind to know it wasn't anything serious," Burns said. "I've dealt with this...it depends on how fast you get the swelling and inflammation down."
The most unclear injury of them all, star OT Thomas was in the medical tent during the fourth quarter because of what the team called a groin injury. He didn't return, and there's still no public diagnosis regarding the extent of the injury.
"We'll see about that," Harbaugh said about Thomas.
There are no real return timetables for any of the four players, though again, none should keep each player out for an extended amount of time.
