San Diego FC play host to Los Angeles FC this weekend with both teams fighting it out at opposite ends of the Western Conference.
San Diego is currently residing 11th in the West, having won only three of their opening 10 matches. Los Angeles, on the other hand, have won six of their first 10 league matches which leaves them third in the standings.
The home side has not won in the MLS since March 8 while Los Angeles has won its last two matches in a three-game unbeaten run in all competitions.
There should be goals in this game, especially if going by the matchups from last season with a total of eight scored across both games as San Diego triumphed 2-1 away and 3-2 at home.
This season, both teams have scored 17 league goals across 10 matches. Four of Los Angeles’ games have seen three or more goals scored, while a whopping seven of San Diego’s games has done likewise.
San Diego have plenty to prove and will be aiming to come out with all guns firing, while Los Angeles will want to close the gap to Vancouver Whitecaps in second place.
Going for LAFC to win this tie at odds of +160 represents excellent value, considering how poor San Diego have been in recent weeks.
Marc Dos Santos has his team well drilled, with their only losses coming against San Jose Earthquakes and Portland Timber, although they have since bounced back.
Dos Santos’ men should be able to take advantage of the fact that their opponents have also shipped 17 goals already this season.
A 1-0 victory over Minnesota United thanks to a goal from David Martínez got the Black and Gold back to winning ways, while they can also find confidence in their CONCACAF Champions Cup form, winning three of their last four matches in the competition.
Despite losing both matches last season to their opponents, LAFC can take advantage of San Diego’s fragile defence to emerge with all three points.
Denis Bouanga has been the main man for Los Angeles this season, but there is better value to be had on plumping for David Martinez to score this weekend.
He comes into the match having scored the winner in the league tie against Minnesota and that was his third goal in nine MLS games this term.
Martinez has also been prolific in the Champions Cup, netting four goals across seven matches for LAFC.
The 20-year-old averages 1.3 shots per game in MLS, while also boasting a 25% goal conversion rate. He should continue his fine form against a poor San Diego defence.
