The 2026 MLB All-Star festivities are set to begin on Monday night with the Home Run Derby.
Eight of the game’s best sluggers are set to take center stage in a battle for the home run crown.
With a new format in place, as well as an exciting group of contenders, the 2026 Home Run Derby at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia is sure to deliver plenty of fireworks.
The event begins at 8 p.m. ET and will air live on Netflix.
Philadelphia's Klye Schwarber has been among the most feared sluggers in baseball over the last few seasons, and now he is poised to hoist the Home Run Derby trophy.
Schwarber enters the All-Star break leading all MLB players with 32 home runs on the season, and he has a unique home field advantage on Monday night.
With the derby taking place at Citizens Bank Park, Schwarber should be extremely comfortable under the bright lights.
He has blasted 19 of his 32 home runs at home, and his home OPS of 1.044 is vastly greater than his road OPS of .826.
He clearly sees the ball extremely well in Philadelphia, and with the home crowd fired up, Schwarber seems to be in a great spot.
It’s also worth noting that Schwarber has plenty of Home Run Derby experience - this will be his third derby after previously participating in 2018 and 2022.
That kind of experience can be very valuable in events like this.
Baseball fans across the country are undoubtedly looking to see as many home runs as possible on Monday night.
However, when looking at the total amount of homers to be hit, the under is the play.
A new format is in place this year, and it will be interesting to see how the competitors take to it.
Major League Baseball has gotten rid of the outs and timer system that has been used in previous years. Now, players will be limited to 20 total swings in the first round and 15 total swings each in the second round and final round.
A limited number of swings has the potential to limit the overall total number of homers.
Furthermore, the majority of the derby field has no Home Run Derby experience. Only Schwarber, Harper and Caminero have previously participated in a Home Run Derby.
The inexperience of Walker, Murakami, Caglianone, Contreras, and Rice makes it tough to expect more than 119.5 home runs to be hit.
Schwarber isn’t the only player participating in the Home Run Derby on their home turf.
Fellow Phillie Bryce Harper is also among the group of competitors, and he has already shined on the derby stage once before.
Back in 2018, Harper won the Home Run Derby at Nationals Park when he was a member of the Nationals.
He had a flair for the dramatic, beating out Schwarber by a single home run in the final round.
Harper now finds himself in a similar situation as he will participate in the derby in his home ballpark.
Harper is up to 20 home runs before the All-Star break, and is now just 17 home runs away from 400 in his career.
He knows how to put on a show for the home crowd, and reaching nine home runs in the first round seems well within reach.
