Dodgers vs. Padres: Prediction, Props & Best Bets (5/19)

One of the best NL rivalries continues in MLB action as the San Diego Padres host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second of a three-game series at Petco Park on Tuesday night. And what an important one as they are neck and neck in the race for the NL West lead.

On Monday night, the Padres earned a tight 1-0 victory to kick off the series and now sit first in the MLB's NL West, Can they continue momentum into the next two games against this juggernaut that is the Dodgers?

Dodgers vs. Padres betting picks and predictions

Padres ML (+135)

San Diego is red-hot, having now won four straight games, and five of their last six. This has them sitting at 29-18, first in the NL West, and third in the entire MLB.

They have certainly overachieved their expectations thus far, but they are continually proving they are a threat. They have a winning record at home(14-10), and I see that further improving in this one.

San Diego’s elite pitching group and arguably the MLB’s top defense will need to be the key here. Starter Michael King was able to pitch 7.0 excellent innings, with Jason Adam and Mason Miller finishing things out with 1.0 inning each. With that being said, the Padres bullpen is fully rested and ready for what could be an active game for them with Griffin Canning leading the way, who has struggled this season.

Los Angeles is coming off a series against the Los Angeles Angels where they went 3-0 and scored 31 runs. As exceptional as that was, this type of performance was almost expected against a very poor team in the Angels. Prior to this, they went 3-4 in their previous two series against the San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves. The Dodgers aren’t necessarily a shoe-in against the league’s competitive teams.

San Diego is feeling themselves, and continue to hold a sense of urgency to take down the cream of the crop and bitter rival. They have really been putting the league on watch, and will continue to do so with their fifth-straight win and second-straight against the two-time defending World Series champs.

Over 8.5 (-110)

Monday night’s contest gave us a 1-0 finish. The game was an absolute pitcher’s duel, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Michael King pitching 7.0 innings each. With the game totalling 9 hits and 5 walks, there was some activity on the bases, but I expect increased activity to translate to a lot of runs in this one.

The Dodgers own the third-highest runs per game average in the entire MLB at 5.17 per game. This is built by the third-best batting average (.262), fourth-most home runs (62), and second-most hits (422) to name a few key stats.

They also own the league’s best on base percentage (.344), so it is very likely they will be an offensive threat to San Diego as they usually are. Their offense will be especially threatening against Padres starter Griffin Canning, who has struggled in minimal usage this season, with a 10.64 ERA and 2.18 WHIP in 3 games (11.0 innings).

The Padres have not been an offensive juggernaut whatsoever, averaging 4.17 per game. This Padres group has not been known for their offense for quite some time, but confidence remains that they can produce runs at any time, due to their cast of stars.

Taking on Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan could be a great chance to build some offensive confidence and momentum, as he has been average thus far with a 4.54 ERA and 1.25 WHIP.

The Dodgers and Padres have combined for an average of 13.66 runs per game over their last three respective games. Their 1-0 finish yesterday is not a total I expect to see in this game, especially with the pitching matchup.
