Lane Kiffin notably led Ole Miss to an 11–1 record last season, but he left the team ahead of their College Football Playoff run to become the head coach of LSU. Defensive coordinator Pete Golding then took the reins and led Ole Miss to the playoff semifinals, but the team lost 31–27 against Miami. Less than a year later, Kiffin is taking his LSU squad north to Oxford to face his former team and former quarterback, Trinidad Chambliss.
Golding and Chambliss have Ole Miss ranked as the No. 8 team in the country in the AP Poll, following wins over No. 24 Louisville and Charlotte. Chambliss has started the season in impressive form, passing for 561 yards and five touchdowns. Running back Kewan Lacy has also been fantastic, rushing for 148 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and three touchdowns.
On the other side, Lane Kiffin brought in quarterback Sam Leavitt and running back Dilin Jones to lead his high-powered offense. Leavitt has been shaky to start the year throwing only two touchdowns and four interceptions. However, Leavitt has been a threat on the ground, rushing for 135 yards and five touchdowns in the opening two games.
Tensions will be high in Oxford on Saturday, with the Ole Miss faithful still angry with Kiffin for how he left. Fortunately for the Rebels, many of the key personnel he recruited remain with the program, such as Golding, Chambliss, and Lacy.
Kiffin has already been making a mockery of college football this year, so Ole Miss will have an even bigger chip on their shoulder than before. This SEC matchup will surely be emotionally charged, both on and off the field, making it a must-watch for college football fans across the country.
LSU (ranked 7th) are one spot above Ole Miss in the AP Poll, following dominant wins over Clemson and Louisiana Tech to start the season. Ole Miss will be their first test against a top-tier opponent.
