Lionel Messi has led Argentina back the World Cup final for the second year in a row, and they are hoping to be the first country to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

While Lionel Messi has been terrific, and Argentina is back in the final, their run to get to this point has been anything but smooth. They will face a Spanish team that made the tournament favorites, France, look elementary in the semifinals.

In the semifinals against England, Argentina were again trailing in the 85th minute, but late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez (both assisted by Lionel Messi) turned the game upside down, and secured Argentina a fourth consecutive hard fought victory, and third come-from-behind win in four games.

Messi and Kylian Mbappe have undoubtably been the best players at the each of the past two World Cup tournaments, and the two stars are tied for the tournament lead with eight goals. They are also still in a heated race for the 2026 Golden Boot award ahead of France's third-place game, but Messi currently owns the tie breaker advantage with four assists to Mbappe's three.

Messi has contributed to 12 goals (8 goals 4 assists) at this World Cup, tying Spain's entire team total. He has also scored or assisted in 11 consecutive World Cup appearances, shattering the previous record.

The 39-year-old Argentine has aged like fine win, and could cement himself as the best player ever by winning his second World Cup.
