Upsets have been plentiful on the women’s side at Wimbledon, but that has done nothing to take away from an intriguing quarterfinal lineup with one of those ties seeing Jessica Pegula face fellow American Coco Gauff.
With six of the top eight seeds already knocked out of the tournament, the women’s title is up for grabs and both Pegula and Gauff will be dreaming of lifting the trophy for the first time.
Despite yet to win a Grand Slam, Pegula is the favorite heading into this contest against Gauff, who has US Open (2023) and French Open (2025) titles on her CV.
Pegula, who at 32 is a decade older than her compatriot, is a solid operator on grass and this will be her second quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon, having reached this stage in 2023.
She has reached three WTA Tour finals on grass, winning the 2024 German Open and the 2025 Bad Homburg Open hile losing in the 2026 German Open.
Having narrowly missed out on a second success in Germany, Pegula went into Wimbledon in strong form and she has dropped just one set in four matches.
Of the eight sets won at SW19, three have been by 6-1 scorelines and she has been imposing herself at the All England Club.
Pegula also leads the head-to-head against Gauff 5-3 and their most recent grass-court meeting, in Berlin in 2024, news in a straight-sets success for the more experienced American.
This will be Gauff’s first quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon and this is not her most favored surface, evidenced by the fact she has never reached a final on grass.
Gauff has been taken to three sets in her last three matches and she may struggle to contain Pegula, who is comfortable on the grass.
While Pegula was pushed to three sets by Iva Jovic in the fourth round, the American has been largely untested at Wimbledon and her first three matches all produced under 22.5 games.
Of the eight meetings between Pegula and Gauff, six have ended in straight sets, including four of the last five.
Both of their grass-court contests were straight-set affairs, with one of those producing fewer than 22.5 games.
With Pegula looking impressive at SW19 and Gauff not hitting her stride, this could end up being a routine win for the more experienced player.
Although Gauff’s service woes are well-documented, she is at least doing a reasonable job of keeping her double faults in check.
Gauff double-faulted nine times against Belinda Bencic in round four, but that was a relatively long three-set match (29 total games).
In a third-round encounter with Claire Liu that lasted 30 games, Gauff doubled just six times, while in her marathon against Sierra she made a mere five and just two were witnessed in the round one win over Tamara Korpatsch.
