The 2026 World Cup will feature a musical halftime show for the very first time, similar to the NFL's famous Super Bowl performances.
FIFA announced earlier this year that the World Cup final will feature halftime show featuring numerous global stars, headlined by Madonna, Shakira and BTS.
Justin Bieber and Burna Boy will also join the headliners on the stage for the 11-minute performance, curated by Coldplay's Chris Martin.
The show will take place during halftime of the World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium (Metlife Stadium) on July 19.
While the Super Bowl as become known for it's halftime shows, these types of performances are not common in soccer.
The UEFA Champions League final has commonly featured a prematch concert, but rarely has it hosted a performance in the middle of the game like this. FIFA did stage a halftime show at the Metlife Stadium last summer during the Club World Cup final in which Chelsea triumphed over PSG.
Coldplay's Chris Martin apparently came up with the idea during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and the idea was pitched as a way to support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which is aiming to raise $100 million to help children across the globe access education and soccer.
Shakira, Madonna, and boy-band BTS will headline the halftime show, and will be joined by Justin Bieber, Burna Boy, and a local choir of elementary school students from Staten Island, New York.
Shakira is the main act of the show due to creating this year's official World Cup anthem, "Dai-Dai," featuring Burna Boy. Shakira, who is Brazilian, and Burna Boy, who is Nigerian, created the song together to promote unity and global celebration.
"Dai-Dai" is an Italian phrase which translates to "come on" or "let's go". The chorus is intended to motivate athletes and listeners to pursue their dreams, and always give their best effort.
Other people who will feature in the halftime show are Coldplay, Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, and the Muppets from Sesame Street (Kermit and Miss Piggy).
