England and Croatia have had to be patient but the two nations finally kick off their World Cup campaigns in Group L when they meet in Arlington on Wednesday night.
The Three Lions have won eight of their last 10 matches and arrive at the tournament having only conceded two goals since the start of September.
Croatia, meanwhile, have lost to Brazil and Belgium in recent friendlies but did beat Slovenia 2-1 in their final warm-up match.
A winning start for either of these sides would put them in the driving seat to reach the knockout stages with Ghana and Panama to play in Group L.
England have been a strong and efficient side under Thomas Tuchel, earning wins without conceding against New Zealand and Costa Rica in their final two warm-ups without setting the world alight.
Likewise, Croatia, who are often well fancied heading into international fixtures, have won nine of their last 12 games. However, they don’t possess the same level of quality as they have in past tournaments Croatia and may struggle.
Croatia did beat England in the semi-finals of World Cup 2018, but the Three Lions are unbeaten in the next three meetings, drawing 0-0 before recording 2-1 and 1-0 victories.
Another tight affair is expected but it is Tuchel’s troops, who are spearheaded by Harry Kane and have the likes of Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon and Morgan Rogers in behind, that can come out on top.
England have conceded only two goals in their last 10 matches and that defensive resilience means chances could be few and far between for Croatia.
There have been fewer than three goals in five of the Three Lions’ last six fixtures and there looks to be a strong chance of that bet landing again.
Two of the last three meetings between England and Croatia have gone under the 2.5-goals mark, and this could be another cagey contest as both teams look to ease themselves into the tournament.
England captain Kane was clinical for Bayern Munich in the 2025/26 season and he has the potential to be one of the most lethal strikers at the World Cup.
The 32-year-old scored 61 goals in 51 matches for the Bavarians across all competitions and will be eager to continue that stellar form for his country.
Kane found the net nine times in nine games for England in 2025 and scored the winner against New Zealand earlier this month.
With Croatia not keeping a clean sheet in six games, Kane will relish the opportunity to get on the scoresheet and will be hoping his teammates provide plenty of quality service.
