The Colorado Buffaloes are optimistic heading into the 2026 college football season, and have revamped their team around sophomore quarterback Julian Lewis. The Buffs brought a lot of new faces to Boulder this season after finishing with just three wins in 2025.
Head coach Deion Sanders brought in a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Brennen Marion, to replace Pat Shurmur. Marion is the creator of the "Go-Go" offense, and joins the Buffs after being the head coach of Sacramento State last year.
In addition to Marion's new system, Lewis has a completely new offense around him. The Buffs brought in running back Damian Henderson II, and wide receivers Danny Scudero, DeAndre Moore Jr., and Kam Perry. Scudero led college football with 1,297 receiving yards at San Jose State in 2025.
Colorado have also overhauled an offensive line that struggled significantly last season. The team added transfers Bo Hughley (LT), Demetrius Hunter (C), Jose Soto (RG), and Taj White (RT), who are expected to create a much cleaner pocket for Lewis this year.
The defense remains the biggest question mark for Sanders' team and will face a stern test in the season opener against Brent Key’s Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets lost starting quarterback Haynes King to the NFL and have replaced him with Alberto Mendoza—the untested younger brother of Fernando Mendoza, who was selected first overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.
With only 19 career NCAA completions to his name, Alberto will make his first start against the Buffaloes on Thursday night. Having defeated Colorado 27-20 in last year’s opener, Georgia Tech will be hoping for a repeat performance in 2026.
