Chelsea vs. Brighton: Preview, Team News, and How to Watch

Following a hard-fought victory against Fulham on the opening day of the season, Chelsea face a tough test on Sunday against their bogey team, Brighton & Hove Albion.

Chelsea were in action as recently as Thursday in the EFL Cup, a consequence of their low Premier League finish last season. Manager Xabi Alonso took the opportunity to give several new faces a chance against third-tier side Luton Town, with Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders and Argentine talent Valentin Barco among those handed a start.

The Blues secured a comfortable 2-0 victory thanks to a goal from Danny Welbeck and an own goal. The veteran English striker is another new arrival, brought in alongside Jordan Henderson to provide much-needed experience.

Chelsea also kicked off their Premier League campaign with a win, defeating Fulham 3-2 in a thrilling Monday night encounter. The season's first goal came after just 33 seconds when Cole Palmer played Joao Pedro through, and the Brazilian deftly chipped the ball over goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

The Cottagers equalized through a Joshua King strike, with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez looking shaky on the play. It is widely expected that Emi Martinez will join from Aston Villa to become the Blues' new number one.

Morgan Rogers put Chelsea back in front with a goal on his debut. Shortly after the break, Cole Palmer made it 3-1, looking revitalized after a difficult previous season. Fulham managed to pull one back, but the match at Craven Cottage ended 3-2. After hosting Brighton this Sunday, a daunting trip to champions Arsenal awaits Chelsea next weekend.

Brighton, meanwhile, started their season with a resounding 4-0 victory over Aston Villa. The Seagulls were rampant in the first half and could have easily scored six or seven goals.

Jack Hinshelwood was the standout performer with two goals, excelling in a more advanced attacking role. Maxim De Cuyper also found the net, and a Victor Lindelöf own goal completed the rout.

De Cuyper, typically a left-back, was given a chance on the wing by manager Fabian Hürzeler. The Belgian international repaid his manager's faith with a stellar performance, and it remains to be seen if he will feature there again on Sunday.

On Thursday, Brighton also secured their place in the main tournament of the Conference League with a 4-0 win against Tromso at the Amex Stadium. Goals came from Charalampos Kostoulas, De Cuyper, Mats Wieffer, and Olivier Boscagli.
