The Boston Celtics will face the Detroit Pistons in the first game of the NBA season today, marking the first season in a decade that the Celtics will play without Jaylen Brown, who was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George.
Detroit (60-22) and Boston (56-26) finished with the two best records in the Eastern Conference last season, making this a highly anticipated contest to kick off the new season.
The Celtics will have a new look this season, but the core of the team is still well established. Head coach Joe Mazzulla's bench remains untouched, while George and Mitchell Robinson will likely be inserted into the starting lineup next to Jayson Tatum, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard.
The Pistons' core also remains relatively the same, headlined by Cade Cunningham and the recently extended Jalen Duren. Detroit lost forward Tobias Harris to the San Antonio Spurs in free agency, but added John Collins and Isaiah Joe to replace him.
Both teams fell short of expectations in the NBA Playoffs last year, but with fresh faces in the building, both teams are expecting to compete for the championship when the regular season comes to a close 82 games from today.
