The Atlanta Braves (37-18) take the best record in Major League Baseball into the middle matchup of a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox (22-31) on Wednesday night at Fenway Park.
Atlanta continued its fine form with a 7-6 victory in Tuesday’s opener, sending Boston to its fourth consecutive loss.
With Wednesday’s contest set for 6:45 pm ET, it’s time to break down the matchup and discuss the best bets to make.
Bryce Elder taking the mound for Atlanta has not always been great news over the years, but it is certainly a good thing this season.
Elder appears to be heading straight for the All-Star Game and is arguably even keeping himself in the Cy Young discussion.
The right-hander is 4-2 with a 1.97 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in addition to a 60-to-21 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 68.2 innings of work, while he faced the Red Sox less than three weeks ago, allowing just three runs on seven hits and no walks in 8.0 innings.
At the plate, the Braves’ 289 runs are the third most in all of MLB. While churning out seven runs on Tuesday, the visitors got home runs from the usual suspects in Matt Olson and Michael Harris II. It was Olson’s 15th of the year and Harris’ 12th.
Meanwhile, Boston’s four-game skid includes a three-game sweep at the hands of visiting Kansas City this past weekend. The Red Sox are now a horrendous 8-18 in their own park this season, by far the worst home record in the entire league.
Boston is sending Connelly Early to the mound, so the home team is also looking good in the pitching department.
Early is 4-2 with a 3.33 ERA and 1.19 WHIP so far this year. The left-hander has allowed more than three runs in only one start and more than two just three times during the 2026 campaign. He limited the Braves to two runs in 5.0 innings on May 16 in Atlanta.
Early better be on top of his game if Boston wants to have any chance because he cannot rely on getting much run support.
Not only is Elder the opposition of the day, but the Red Sox are the absolute worst offense in all of baseball in terms of run production. That’s right – their 200 runs scored for the year ranks them dead last.
It’s also worth noting that both bullpens rank in the top 11 league wide in ERA. All things considered, it seems like runs will be at a bit of a premium on Tuesday at Fenway.
Michael Harris II went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs on Tuesday. Atlanta’s center fielder has now hit safely in six of the last seven games, with four multi-hit performances during this stretch.
His hot streak should continue against Early. In the same matchup earlier this month, Harris went 1-for-2 with a homer off the southpaw en route to a 3-2 Braves victory in 10 innings.
