Around five months ago, Bo Nix took his final snap of the season when he kneeled down against the Buffalo Bills to secure the first Denver Broncos playoff victory since the team won Super Bowl 50 in early 2016.
Of course, at the time, fans didn't know that would be his last snap considering the win and an AFC Championship game to look forward to.
However, after the game concluded and the team was celebrating, it turned out that Nix broke his ankle when he ran left and was stuffed at the line of scrimmage earlier in the possession. During the same night of the emotional victory, he was ruled out for the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots - Denver's offense would only muster up seven points without its starting quarterback in a loss.
Since then, Nix has completed two surgeries to get his ankle healthy. Broncos' head coach Sean Payton implied that Nix's injury was coming sooner rather than later, to which Nix vehemently disagreed in a press conference after his initial surgery.
Payton's quote, along with the second surgery needed to cleanup scar tissue, caused some anguish within the Broncos fanbase. With Nix's legs being such a huge factor for his play last year, fans are wondering if he'll be as confident to scramble around and test his ankle this season.
Recent updates from Payton have dimmed the concerns surrounding Nix's recovery, however. On Thursday last week, he was on a podcast with former ESPN analyst Trey Wingo and provided a crucial update regarding Nix's status.
Payton stated that while Nix hasn't participated in any OTA practices yet, the Broncos QB will be "fully healthy before June ends."
"There won't be any hiccups once training camp begins (in late June), and I'm optimistic that we'll get to see him in that third week," he continued. The third week is the mandatory minicamp program that occurs at the end of June and beginning of July.
Getting Nix plenty of offseason reps will be key for a Broncos offense that added electric wide receiver Jaylen Waddle from the Miami Dolphins via trade. Denver believes that Waddle is the final piece of the puzzle to fully unlock the potential of Nix and the offense.
