Belinda Bencic and Coco Gauff are set to face off in a highly anticipated quarter-final match at the WTA 1000 event in Toronto, Canada.
It hasn't taken long for Bencic and Gauff to meet again on the court. Their last encounter was a hard-fought battle at Wimbledon, where the American star rallied from a set down to secure a three-set victory over her Swiss opponent.
While Bencic may not have captured any titles or made major headlines this season, she has consistently advanced through the early rounds of every tournament she's played. However, she has yet to reach a final. Her best results include reaching the quarter-finals at the WTA 1000 in Miami—where she was also defeated by Gauff—and the WTA 500 in Charleston. She also made commendable fourth-round appearances at both the French Open and Wimbledon, with Gauff once again ending her run at the All England Club.
Now in Toronto, Bencic has another shot at a semi-final berth, but she must overcome Gauff, who has become a formidable obstacle for the Swiss player. Bencic has not defeated the American since their match at Indian Wells in 2025.
Gauff has come close to winning a couple of titles this season but also faced disappointment. She was unable to defend her French Open title, exiting in the third round against Anastasia Potapova, despite having just reached the final in Rome. The American also delivered a strong performance at Indian Wells, pushing Aryna Sabalenka to three sets in the final, and reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon before falling to Karolina Muchova. Bencic will be her toughest opponent yet in Canada.
