Two young American tennis stars - Ben Shelton and Learner Tien - faceoff against each other tonight in Montreal in hopes of reaching the final.
The winner of tonight's match will play the winner of Rafael Jodar and Brandon Nakashima in the final of the National Bank Open.
Shelton, ranked No. 10 in the world, has breezed through the tournament without dropping a single set in his matchups against Jenson Brooksby (6-3, 7-5), Zizou Bergs (6-3, 6-2), Joao Fonseca (6-3, 7-6), and Jakub Mensik (6-3, 6-1). He's the defending champ and is looking to have some serious momentum heading into U.S. Open season.
Tien, meanwhile, has steadily creeped up the ATP rankings and is currently sitting at No. 19 in the world. The 20-year-old is looking for his third career singles title after he was the 2025 Moselle Open and the 2026 Geneva Open within in the past calendar year.
Tien has has faced Gael Monfils, Tommy Paul, Thiago Agustin Tirante, and Daniel Merida, only dropping a set early against Monfils en route to the semifinal.
These two Americans have played against each other twice, and surprisingly, Tien has won them both. He first beat Shelton on grass at the Mallorca Open in June 2025 (6-4, 7-6), then knocked off the higher-ranked American at Indian Wells on hard court in March (7-6, 4-6, 6-3).
