MLS club Orlando City SC officially signed Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid, we'll look at Orlando's odds to win the MLS Cup, and their potential lineup.
French international forward Antoine Griezmann's exceptional career is winding down, and reports indicate that he is keen on a new challenge in MLS.
Global soccer reporter Fabrizio Romano and MLS reporter Tom Bogert first broke news that Griezmann was interested in joining MLS, and Orlando City SC have come out on top.
Orlando City officially signed the Frenchman on a free transfer, and he will join the MLS side in the summer after the conclusion of the his contract at Atletico Madrid.
He has signed a two-year deal that will be valid through the 2027/28 season, with a club option for 2028/29.
I am very excited to begin this next chapter of my career with Orlando City
-Griezmann
Orlando will use Griezmann to fill it's vacant designated player slot, meaning that his salary would not count towards the salary cap.
Griezmann has won the 2016 Footballer of the Year award, and in 2018 he lifted the World Cup trophy with France and secured the UEFA Europa League title with Atletico Madrid.
At 34-years-old, Griezmann has scored six goals in six La Liga starts, and scored one goal in the UEFA Champions League in four starts this season. After being the leader on the pitch for Atletico Madrid, Griezmann finds himself coming off the bench more often than not this season.
MLS clubs were monitoring his situation in Madrid, and Orlando City SC have emerged as the favorites to sign the Frenchman. Orlando City have sent a proposal to Atletico Madrid, and it is now up to the player and his current club to get the deal done.
Orlando City's sporting director and general manager Ricardo Moreira went to Spain on several occasions to work in the deal, and the club were eager to get it done before the MLS transfer deadline on March 26.
Antoine Griezmann's current head coach, Diego Simeone had this to say on the subject: "I hope he chooses what is best for him, and what he truly wants, he deserves to have what he desires."
When Griezmann arrives in the summer, he will immediately raise the team's ceiling, and make them a dark horse contender to win MLS Cup after finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference last season.
