The race for the first overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft is primarily centred on three prospects: Grady Emerson, Roch Cholowsky, and Vahn Lackey.
Grady Emerson is a high school shortstop from Fort Worth, Texas. While he may not be the flashiest prospect in the draft, he possesses one of the most complete skill sets. His bat-to-ball skills are his biggest strength, and scouts believe there is more power in his swing than his high school numbers suggest.
Roch Cholowsky is significantly older than Emerson and currently plays as an infielder for the UCLA Bruins. The 21-year-old from Chandler, Arizona, went undrafted out of high school because he believed in his ability to develop into a No. 1 overall pick—a gamble that appears to be paying off.
The third major candidate is Vahn Lackey. The 21-year-old catcher from Suwanee, Georgia, played his college baseball with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
