Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas has reportedly reached a verbal agreement to join Women's Super League side London City Lionesses.
While no contract has been formally signed as of yet, the former Barcelona star is understood to have settled on terms with the Women's Super League side, in what signifies a landmark signing for the club and the league itself.
Initial discussions between Putellas and London City began before her departure from FC Barcelona was officially announced and, despite reported interest from several teams in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States, the Spanish icon appears set to move to the English top flight.
Putellas's arrival in the WSL would be one of the most significant transfers in the league's history, joining as a global icon in women's football.
A two-time Ballon d'Or winner and among the contenders for this year's award, Putellas' decorated career includes three major trophies with the Spanish national team, one with Espanyol and an eye-watering 30 titles with Barcelona.
London City, who have only been in the WSL for one season so far, are managed by Spanish coach Eder Maestre.
The Lionesses impressed in their first season back in the WSL last season, finishing sixth in the overall table and establishing themselves as the "best of the rest", behind Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Already possessing top players like Grace Geyoro, Nikita Parris, Delphine Cacscarino and Jana Ferndandez, London City are looking to properly compete in the WSL under American businesswoman and investor Michele Kang, who purchased the club in 2023.
England's first stand-alone professional women's team, the Lionesses are attempting to build one of the most ambitious projects in women's football, with the club also reportedly interested in Putellas' former Barcelona teammate Mapi León and former England international goalkeeper Mary Earps.
