Minimum salaries to be introduced to WSL and WSL 2

Minimum salaries are being introduced for players in the top two tiers of professional women's football from this season.

It was one of the requirements introduced by WSL Football, the company overseeing England's professional women's football leagues, and while the actual salary hasn't been revealed, it has been described as a 'full-time wage'.

The salary range is expected to be made public at a later date, and wages will based on a number of factors including age, experience and the league they're playing in.

WSL Football's chief operating officer Holly Murdoch said to BBC Sport: "We feel that's a really positive move. We have so many players who have had to juggle part-time roles while playing football,

"Being able to ensure all our players can earn a full-time wage from football is very, very important. I would say it's the start as it's a framework we can develop on.

"We have worked really closely with the PFA on what those thresholds should look like. We will be reviewing that constantly."

While the move seems a positive one, it has had a knock-on effect; Blackburn Rovers withdrew from WSL 2 in May with the owners unwilling to meet the league's new requirements, which include minimum standards on facilities, number of full-time staff, wellbeing support and contact hours with players.

The 2025/26 WSL season will see new faces as the London City Lionesses join the top flight after their promotion last term.

Chelsea will bid to win a seventh consecutive WSL title after their runaway success last season. Sonia Bompastor's side get their campaign underway on Friday at home to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
