Wrexham release defender after just six games to put Charlton Athletic & other Championship rivals on alert

Wrexham have announced the shock departure of Conor Coady with the former England man having featured just six times for the Welsh club.

The 33-year-old arrived at the Racecourse Ground amidst huge fanfare 12 months ago, but has struggled to live up to the hype that surrounded his move.

Wrexham reportedly paid around £2 million to capture the signing for the former Wolverhampton Wanderers star, beating off stern competition from numerous other Championship clubs.

However, after starting in each of the Red Dragons' opening five league fixtures in 2025/26, he subsequently plummeted down the pecking order.

Boss Phil Parkinson sanctioned a loan move to Charlton Athletic in January, for whom he made 12 appearances for, and scored one goal, as he helped the Addicks preserve their second-tier status.

It's understood a return to the Valley could now be on the cards for Coady with boss Nathan Jones keen on defensive reinforcements after losing two players to injury in his side's EFL Cup loss at Tottenham Hotspur last week.

Nottingham Forest youngster Tylor Bindon has arrived on loan until the end of the campaign, whilst he could now accelerate a second move for Coady after Wrexham officially confirmed his departure on Monday.

"Wrexham AFC can confirm defender Conor Coady has left the Football Club, following the mutual termination of his contract," a statement read.

"Coady joined Wrexham from Leicester City in August 2025 and made six appearances in all competitions for the Club, before a loan spell with Charlton Athletic in January 2026.

"All at Wrexham AFC would like to thank Conor for his efforts while with the Club and wish him well for the future."

The 10-time capped England international hasn't featured at all this season, failing to be named in the matchday squad in any of Wrexham's four league and cup fixtures.
