Winners & Losers from England's international break

England sign off from extended international duty with three wins from their four Nations League matches.

It very easily could've been four from four too; Harry Kane missing a penalty to send the Three Lions two goals to the good against Spain, before strikes from Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal saw the world champions pull off comeback 3-2 win at Wembley.

A pretty routine 2-0 victory away at Czechia followed for Thomas Tuchel's men, but the highlight of the break really was England's 7-0 demolition of Croatia in Rijeka. Slaven Bilic's men -- although admittedly hugely underperforming -- had absolutely no answers to the dazzling attacking display offered up by England, slumping to their biggest-ever home defeat.

Tuchel's men had more joy back on home soil against the Czechs in their fourth and final game; Kane netted a brace in 3-0 win and drew alongside Peter Shilton for the most caps earned for the Three Lions.

While players are now set to head back to their respective clubs, we take a look at some winners and losers from the break...

Football

Winners

Jude Bellingham

It was hard for Jude Bellingham to elevate his standing within the national team setup, but his performances over this break might have just done the trick.

The 23-year-old has always cut a talismanic figure when on the pitch and he really has looked like a future captain in recent matches.

He helped himself to three assists and a goal during England's 7-0 mauling of Croatia in Rijeka, however, his impact goes far deeper than just surface level stats.

Lewis Hall

For many, the decision to omit Lewis Hall from England's 26-man World Cup squad over the summer was Tuchel's greatest blunder.

Fitness issues aside, Hall has been absolutely fantastic for Newcastle ever since making the switch from Chelsea in 2024.

The 22-year-old barely puts a foot wrong and, barring injury, is an absolute certainty to start at left-back at the Euros in 2028.

Alex Scott

Alex Scott's full England debut received plaudits from virtually all corners, putting on a midfield masterclass against Croatia.

The partnership that he struck up with Elliot Anderson in the heart of midfield was not insignificant either, with some fans calling for the less creatively-focused Declan Rice to be dropped when the Three Lions are tasked with breaking down a compact low block.

Unfortunately for Scott, he will now miss eight weeks through injury, a spell on the sidelines that includes England's next camp in November.

Anthony Gordon

It's amazing what a bit of sun on your back can do, something Anthony Gordon knows all too well since making a summer switch to Barcelona.

The Liverpool-born winger spoke prior to the international break about how his technical play is finally getting the respect that, in his opinion, it deserves since switching St James' Park for the Nou Camp.

He's clearly playing with a huge confidence at the moment and helped himself to goals against Spain, Czechia and Croatia.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Although he's not exactly set the world alight since making the move to Real Madrid, Trent Alexander-Arnold can maybe consider himself as hard done by during Tuchel's reign as England manager thus far.

The ex-Liverpool man wasn't included in the World Cup squad -- despite the Three Lions being thin on the ground at right-back -- but, after being reintegrated into the squad over the last few weeks, has grabbed his opportunity with both hands.

His assist for Gordon's opener away at Czechia summed up exactly why so many fans feel so strongly about his inclusion; providing a trademark delivery that so few of his teammates would be able to conjure up.

Losers

Cole Palmer

"He misses way too many camps."

Not exactly what you want to be hearing from your manager if you're trying to play yourself into contention to start at a home Euros in two years' time...

Cole Palmer had started the season in electric form, scoring twice and adding two more assists in five Premier League matches for Chelsea so far.

The stars had aligned for Palmer to show Tuchel why he was wrong to leave him out of his World Cup plans, but in excusing himself from international duty, may have fallen a couple of places down the pecking order.

Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi is one of the nailed on starters in England's starting XI, but he didn't exactly cover himself in glory when inexplicably gifting Spain the opening goal at Wembley.

The naturally left-footed Jarrad Branthwaite is now on the scene after finally proving his fitness and, all of a sudden, there is a little bit of competition for that left-sided centre back spot.

Djed Spence

Another player, like Palmer, who may have suffered from not being present at this camp is Djed Spence.

After facing criticism in early World Cup matches, the Inter Milan defender soon won over England fans with a series of excellent displays in an unnatural left-back position.

However, the emergence of Hall leaves his place in the starting XI very much up for debate.

Marcus Rashford

Anthony Gordon 2-0 Marcus Rashford...

Not only has Gordon taken Rashford's left-wing spot at Barcelona, but it looks as if the Manchester United winger has lost all hope of starting ahead of Gordon for England in any sort of meaningful fixture.

Rashford is yet to hit the ground running back in the fold at Old Trafford and will have to go some if he wants to work his way back into Tuchel's plans.
