Wigan Athletic are reportedly looking to conclude a deal to sign West Bromwich Albion winger Akeel Higgins.
Manager Gary Caldwell is looking to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season as the club looks to improve on a 16th-placed finish.
He will be targeting the top-half as a minimum but there is no reason why the Latics can't push for the top-six with some quality additions.
Only three of the four relegated clubs scored fewer goals that Wigan last season and it is clear to see where their problems lie.
Journalist Alan Nixon has reported that Wigan are on the verge of completing a deal for West Brom's Higgins in an attempt to solve that particular issue.
Primarily a left-winger, Higgins progressed through the West Brom academy but his first-team experience with the Baggies has been limited to a solitary FA Cup outing.
The 20-year-old got his first taste of first-team football last season when he joined Exeter City on a season-long loan.
Caldwell was in charge of the Grecians at the time as Higgins went on to feature 31 times for the club.
Despite a return of two goals and two assists, Caldwell was sufficiently impressed with the winger and it is believed that the deal for Wigan to sign the player will be a permanent one.
Opportunities at West Brom have been decreased significantly with the arrival of Barney Stewart and Jimmy-Jay Morgan, therefore Higgins is keen to go and make a name for himself in League One.
