Ben Shelton booked his place in the US Open semi-finals with a remarkable five-set victory over tournament favourite Carlos Alcaraz.
Reigning champion Alcaraz was the odds-on favourite to make his fourth US Open semi-final on Wednesday morning after easing through his first four fixtures, but Shelton had other ideas on home turf.
The contest was forced into a match-deciding tiebreak with the scores level at six games all in the final set, and it was the American who came out on top, winning 10-7 to end the four hour and 28 minute contest.
In handing Alcaraz his third defeat of the calendar year, Shelton has earned a spot in the final four of the US Open for the second time in his career, last doing so in 2023 when he crashed out in the semi-finals to eventual winner Novak Djokovic.
