Take a look at Aston Villa's most frequent penalty takers.
Aston Villa have been awarded four penalties in the 2025/26 season, all taken by four different players. Interestingly, Villa are yet to be awarded a spot-kick in the Premier League, with all of their penalties coming in the Europa League.
Ollie Watkins took and scored their first penalty of the campaign against Bologna, but had been substituted when Villa were awarded a penalty against Go Ahead Eagles. Emi Buendia stepped up on that occasion but was unsuccessful from the spot.
Donyell Malen scored Villa's second penalty of the season while Watkins was on the bench, though Morgan Rogers was on the pitch at the time.
With Watkins and Buendia on the pitch, Rogers was given the honours as Villa met Bologna once again, though his effort was saved.
Date | Taker | Competition | Scored? |
25th September 2025 | Ollie Watkins | Europa League | No |
23rd October 2025 | Emi Buendia | Europa League | No |
6th November 2025 | Donyell Malen | Europa League | Yes |
16th April 2026 | Morgan Rogers | Europa League | No |
In the 2024/25 season, Ollie Watkins took three of Villa's 10 penalties, with six taken by Marcus Rashford, Jhon Duran and Marco Asensio, all of whom have since left the club.
With Watkins being on the pitch for penalties since missing one earlier in the season, he might have been demoted behind Donyell Malen prior to the Dutchman's move to Roma. With Buendia and Rogers also missing penalties more recently, Watkins appears to be the most likely taker, though it was captain John McGinn who stepped up first in the EFL Cup shoot-out with Brentford back in September.
It's worth noting Douglas Luiz was only penalty-taking duties during his first spell at Villa Park, but hasn't been on the pitch when a penalty has been given since his return.
