When did Atletico Madrid last lose a UEFA Champions League knockout game at home?

Atletico Madrid will look to keep a phenomenal home record alive this evening when they play host Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg.

Diego Simeone's side find themselves within touching distance of a first European semi-final in nearly a decade after goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth secured a 2-0 win at the Camp Nou last week.

However, in order to progress to the final four the hosts will need to hold off a Barcelona side that have one of the best attacking records in world football.

When did Atletico Madrid last lose a UEFA Champions League knockout game at home?

Under Simeone Los Colchoneros have never lost a home fixture in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages, with a record of 11 wins and six draws.

Even more impressively, Atletico have conceded just 5 goals in those 17 games - an almost unbelievable defensive record they hope will continue this evening.

In fact, the last time Atletico fell to a home defeat in the knockout stages of a European competition came all the way back in 1997, more than a decade before current Barcelona talisman Lamine Yamal was even born.

After a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam, Atletico took on Ajax in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final in March of that year at the Vicente Calderón Stadium.

With Simeone captaining the hosts from midfield, Atletico took the lead through Kiko Narvaez before Ronald de Boer produced a second-half equaliser.

Atletico had the chance to reclaim their lead in the closing stages but Juan Esnaider was denied from the penalty spot by Edwin van der Sar and the game went to extra-time.

Portuguese winger Dani put Ajax back in front, before Atletico clawed back to level terms after they were awarded another spot-kick - this one converted by Milinko Pantic.

With a penalty shootout looming, Tijani Babangida produced a dramatic winner for the visitors sending Ajax through to the final four where they would be beaten by eventual winners Juventus.
