With mile world record holder Josh Kerr absent from the field, the battle for continental glory is wide open in the 1500m and Wightman will sense an opportunity to add European gold to the world title he achieved in 2022.
Wightman faces stern competition from Isaac Nader, who got the better of the Scotsman at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, and Welshman Jake Heyward, whose best result was runner-up at the 2022 European Athletics Championships.
