What does EGOT stand for?

EGOT is an acronym that refers to the achievement of winning all four of the major entertainment awards in North America.

The EGOT is known for being the 'Grand Slam' of show business and is recognised as one of the most prestigious titles within Hollywood.

Origin of the EGOT

The term EGOT originated in 1984, when Miami Vice actor Philip Michael Thomas coined the term in reference to his dream of achieving the accolade, even wearing an EGOT medallion.

The title has since become a phenomenon within Hollywood, as performers strive to achieve EGOT status.

As of 2026, there have been 21 people who have achieved the desired title of EGOT winner.

Triple threat stars such as Cynthia Erivo, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hugh Jackman and even Beyonce are on their way to earning the EGOT status.

There are a handful of performers who have won an 'Honorary EGOT' due to one of their winning accolades being achieved through a special or honorary award.

Notable EGOT winners

• Robert Lopez, most famously known for his composition of Frozen, is the only person in history to win an EGOT twice with over eight individual awards across the four ceremonies. Lopez is also the youngest recipient, becoming an EGOT winner at 39 following his work on 'Remember Me' from Coco (2014).

• American composer, Richard Rodgers was the first to win an EGOT in 1962 before the term was originated.

• Helen Hayes claimed the status in 1977 as the first women to have won all four awards.

• Songwriting duo, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul became the most recent recipient's of the EGOT in 2024 after winning their first Emmy award.
