The advent of the Super Over resulted in one of the most thrilling and dramatic changes in the modern era of Cricket.

Though occurrences few and far between, when a match is decided by a Super Over, it rarely disappoints.

We take a look at what a Super Over is, its rules and some famous Super Overs from down the years...

What is a Super Over?

A Super Over was designed to resolve tied matches in limited-over Cricket.

Not applicable in the Test sphere due to the draw being in play, the Super Over is used to decide T20 and ODI matches.

The Super Over is a one-over eliminator where, in the event of a tie, each team bats for one additional over. The team that scores the most runs in the over wins the match, resulting in a tense, high-stakes, six-ball shootout.

Rules of a Super Over

  • Each team bats for one over each.

  • Each team picks one bowler to deliver the over.

  • The Super Over ends if the batting team loses two wickets.

  • The fielding restrictions will mirror the powerplay restrictions that were in place during the match.

If the Super Over also ends in a tie, then it is down to the individual competition's rules to determine the outcome.

Some play an additional Super Over, others go on boundary count and wickets lost can also be used to decide the winner.

2019 ODI World Cup final - The most famous Super Over

Considered by many as the greatest game ever played, a Super Over decided the 2019 ODI World Cup final between England and New Zealand.

Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler went back out to bat for England after the scores were tied 241, scoring 15 runs off the bowling of Trent Boult.

New Zealand sent out Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham to face Jofra Archer, needing 16 runs to prevail.

Needing two from the final delivery, Guptill hit the ball found Jason Roy in the deep and, as he scampered back for the winning runs, he failed to make his ground and was ran out.

Although the Super Over was tied, England were declared the winners due to their superior boundary count.
