West Ham in talks with FA Cup-winning defender from Fenerbahce

Championship favourites West Ham are hoping to bolster their defensive options with the signing of Çağlar Söyüncü from Fenerbahce.

According to reports from journalist Dominik Schneider, the Hammers have ramped up their interest in the 30-year-old defender with former France international Jean-Clair Todibo looking set to leave the London Stadium before the window slams shut on Tuesday night.

After initially being linked with a move to Aston Villa, it seems as if Todibo will head back to France where he is expected to join Coupe de France holders RC Lens on loan.

League One

"Çağlar Söyüncü wants to leave Fenerbahçe. The centre-back is currently in talks with West Ham United. Outcome remains open," Schneider revealed exclusively on his X account.

Fans in England will be familiar with Söyüncü from the five years that he spent with Leicester City in the Premier League where, for some time, he was a regular fixture in the heart of the Foxes' defence, earning a place in the Premier League Team of the Year in 2019/20 and lifting the FA Cup the following campaign.

His time at the King Power came to an end upon the expiry of his contract as Leicester suffered relegation to the Championship.

The Turkey international had a brief stint with Atletico Madrid before signing permanently with his current club Fenerbahce after a successful loan spell with the 19-time Super Lig champions.

Centre back minutes have been shared between Airidas Golambeckis, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Max Kilman at West Ham so far this season as they plot an instant return back to the top-flight. Results have so far been disappointing this season, drawing twice and losing once in their three league matches so far.

Nuno Espirito Santo's men have brought in seven players this summer, their most expensive outlay the capture of Celtic midfielder Arne Engels for a Championship-record fee of €25.75m.

The Hammers also added 2024/25 Championship top goalscorer Joel Piroe to their ranks and the Suriname international is 14/1 to finish atop the scoring charts again this season.
