The United Kingdom appears set to host the 2035 FIFA Women's World Cup after it was confirmed they're the sole bidders for the tournament.
In March, the Football Associations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland collectively expressed an interest to stage the World Cup across all four home nations.
The deadline for expressions of interest in hosting the tournament passed on Monday and upon discussing the bidding process at the UEFA Congress in Belgrade, FIFA president Gianni Infantino declared the UK's preliminary bid is the sole offer received for 2035.
“I can confirm that we received one bid for 2031 and one valid bid for 2035," Infantino stated. "The 2035 bid is from Europe from the home nations.
“The path is there for the Women’s World Cup to be taking place in 2031 and 2035 with some great countries in some great nations to boost even more the women’s football movement.”
Formal bids for the 2025 Women's World Cup must be submitted this winter and a vote to confirm the hosts will be held in 2026.
If approved, it will be the first tournament hosted in the United Kingdom since the UEFA Women's Euro 2022, which boasted the highest attendance figures for a Women's European Championships.
England prevailed that year, defeating Germany 2-1 in extra-time courtesy of Chloe Kelly's winner, and all four home nations will have the opportunity to compete in what will be an expanded 48-team tournament.
Upon confirmation of the news, England's FA CEO Mark Bullingham said: “We are honoured to be the sole bidder for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035.
“Hosting England's first FIFA World Cup since 1966, along with our home nations partners, will be very special. The hard work starts now, to put together the best possible bid by the end of the year.”
