Over the last few years, Tottenham fans have experienced more false dawns than hot dinners.
The sacking of Mauricio Pochettino wasn't exactly popular in North London, but Spurs fans had to move forward. Since 2019, they've veered from big-name Jose Mourinho to Nuno Espirito Santo, who'd done a superb job at Wolves. When that appointment failed, it was back to another big name in Antonio Conte.
Desperate for a winner, Tottenham looked north of the border to Ange Postecoglou, who did -- to his credit -- bring a European trophy to the club. But a 17th-place finish in the Premier League saw the Australian dismissed, with Thomas Frank -- more in the Espirito Santo mould -- hired.
Igor Tudor was then drafted in as a firefighter but only served to drag Spurs into a relegation battle. Roberto De Zerbi kept the club in the top flight and after massive summer investment, Spurs fans can start to look forward once again.
"We always tend to get a bit carried away in pre-season so I wouldn’t say there’s been a massive shift but I do feel more confident than last season," said Tottenham fan and podcast host Ben Bowman.
"I felt alright about the Thomas Frank appointment but with De Zerbi, the way he’s speaking the confidence he brings, and also backed up by the quality players we’ve brought in, we are in a good place.
Speaking to bet365 News, we got Ben's thoughts on the upcoming campaign.
What are you most looking forward to seeing from Tottenham this season?
Hopefully some home wins! That’d be nice after the last couple of years. We’ve revamped our midfield with Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, I’m looking forward to seeing Fernandes playing; I think he’s the right sort of profile and what we’ve been missing: someone who can control a game and play through the lines. But it’d be nice to go back to Tottenham and feel we’re going to win some football matches.
If Tottenham could sign one more player this summer, who would it be?
If he hadn’t have got injured I’d have said Eli Junior Kroupi from Bournemouth. The two other attackers we’re linked with are Cody Gakpo and Savinho which I don’t mind.
It’s difficult because that’s the area we haven’t done anything to strengthen so far and I don’t think there are hugely realistic options that I’m looking at and thinking ‘yes, definitely get him’.
I’m going to say Savinho because we’ve been linked with him for so long, it’d be good to get him over the line. At Tottenham we like to have wingers that can get you off your seat and I think he can do that.
What's a good season for Tottenham?
Getting back into European football and kicking on from there, as well as a good run in the cup. I think we can challenge for the UEFA Champions League especially if there are five spots, but I’d say a good season is just having that stability, getting back into Europe and kicking on.
What's a bad season for Tottenham?
Definitely another relegation battle! I think bad season would be finishing in the bottom half. I know the league’s really competitive but bottom half down would be bad for us.
