Top five Oscars moments

Every year, Hollywood awaits the Academy Awards to celebrate the greatest films of the year. We take a look at the top five most memorable moments from the Oscars that have gone down in history.

1. Will Smith slaps Chris Rock

American actor and comedian Chris Rock hosted the 94th Academy Awards, resulting in a controversial moment that captured major media attention.

During the Best Documentary category, Rock publicly made a joke at Jada Pinkett Smith.

Unfortunately for Rock, her husband did not find humour within the remark.

Within seconds, fellow actor Will Smith appeared on stage before slapping Rock and defending his visibly offended wife.

Despite being shaken, Rock continued his hosting duties and commented: "That was the greatest night in the history of television".

Smith won the Oscar that year for his performance in King Richard, spiking the viewership to an impressive 17.4 million during his acceptance speech.

As a consequence to his actions, Smith was banned from the Academy Awards for 10 years.

2. Jennifer Lawrence's fall

Upon her acceptance for Best Actress for her performance in the Silver Linings Playbook, Jenifer Lawrence took a trip up the stairs in a Dior gown creating one of the most viral Oscars moments.

Lawrence was praised for her humorous recovery as she embraced the moment, exemplifying her popular reputation amongst fans.

The actress still recalls the 2013 moment as a highlight of her career alongside winning her only Academy Award.

3. Moonlight and La La Land mix-up

In a major 2017 Oscars error, presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway received the wrong envelope for Best Picture.

The pair announced La La Land as the Academy Award winner, which was shortly followed by acceptance speeches from the creative team.

After a short commotion from the Oscars team, La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz announced that a mistake has been made and therefore congratulated Moonlight.

This moment goes down historically as the biggest Academy Award mix-up.

4. Charlie Chaplin standing ovation

English actor Charlie Chaplin rose to fame during the era of silent movies before passing away in 1977.

During the 44th Academy Awards, Chaplin received an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to Hollywood.

Upon acceptance, Chaplin was greeted with an historic 12-minute standing ovation in a record-setting moment of appreciation.

5. The Streaker

1974, Oscar audiences received a major shock when a naked man streaked from one side of the stage to another.

This was shortly before Elizabeth Taylor was due to announce Best Picture.

Oscars host, David Niven, regained composure and continued with the ceremony in one of the most shocking Academy Awards moments.
