The Frenchman had earned plaudits from across the football world for his maiden campaign at the Signal Iduna Park, being named the Bundesliga's Rookie of the Year and helping Dortmund to victory in the DFB-Pokal.
When Barcelona moved to sign the forward they agreed a deal worth a potential £135.5million including add-ons, making Dembele the second most expensive player of all time, after Neymar's move to PSG.
That total fee remains the highest ever paid for a player from the Bundesliga, though Florian Wirtz's move to Liverpool last summer had a higher up-front fee.
