Former Manchester United star Nicky Butt said that Galatasaray was the most intimidating away ground he ever visited as a player.
The former midfielder spent more than a decade with United, competing in the UEFA Champions League every season bar one, and when asked on The Good, The Bad and The Football, which the most intimidating ground he ever visited was, Butt was unequivocal.
"For me, hands down, the most intimidating place I've ever been was Galatasaray," he said. "It was three hours before [the game], it wasn't when you walk on the pitch at Anfield and they all want to throw stuff at you and they hate you - I quite liked that.
"Driving up to the stadium and you can hear it. When you play football you think 'I'm on a pitch, no one can touch me, I can do what I want. there's a referee, there's police around you... in Galatasaray the police used to hit you with truncheons!
"Going down the steps to the changing room, they'd hit you in the legs."
Paul Scholes echoed his former team mates sentiments about the raucous Galatasaray fans, adding: "From 12 o'clock, midday, that stadium was full shouting "we will, we will **** you'."
Butt played against Galatasaray in 1994 when the Red Devils drew 0-0. It came the year after the infamous 'Welcome to Hell' match, in which United players were involved in a fracas with the police after the match, with Eric Cantona being hit by a policeman following a sending off.
