Saturday’s French Open Women’s final promises to be an historic occasion as qualifier Maja Chwalinska faces teenager Mirra Andreeva for the title of ‘Queen of Clay’.
This year’s tournament has delivered shocks aplenty, and both finalists pulled off upsets in their semi-final wins on Thursday.
Chwalinska is only the second qualifier to reach a women’s Grand Slam final and the lowest-ranked French Open finalist at No.114, when the tournament began.
The 24-year-old Pole has dropped only one set in nine consecutive wins to get to the final, beating three seeded players en route.
And she will have the Paris crowd firmly in her corner on Saturday if Thursday’s semi is anything to go by, as Chwalinska was roared on to a 7-6 6-4 victory over Diana Shnaider.
Andreeva was just as impressive in her semi-final dismantling of 15th seed Marta Kostyuk, who had beaten her twice previously this year and was on a 17-match winning streak on clay.
The world number eight said she's been "in the zone” in her past two matches, where she has dropped only seven games, and goes into this final as the favourite to claim her maiden major title and become the youngest French Open winner since Monica Seles 36 years ago.
The Russian has long been predicted as a Grand Slam winner and may not get a better chance to do it, but Chwalinska’s fairy tale in Paris may contain one last thrilling chapter.

If sense prevails and the classier player wins on Saturday, then it will be Andreeva who lifts the trophy and poses for photographs after the match.
She has been the best player on clay in the WTA this year, reaching the final in Madrid and taking the Linz title before bulldozing her way through six rounds at Roland Garros.
Chwalinska’s run has been magical, but Andreeva represents a level she has not yet faced in Paris.
The Russian teenager’s tennis IQ is extraordinary — she absorbs pace, redirects angles, and constructs points with a maturity far beyond her age.
However, her temperament can be brittle and she has had more than a couple of on-court meltdowns already this year.
After losing twice previously to Kostyuk, it was perhaps in her favour that she started Thursday’s semi as the underdog.
That won’t be the case on Saturday and the crowd will be fully behind Chwalinska after falling in love with her Cinderella story.
The Polish player has nothing to lose and has already been reaping the financial benefits of her run, with fresh sponsors popping up on her clothing by the round.
She can give Andreeva enough of a problem with slices, drop shots and changes of rhythm to ensure this match is closer than the Russian’s last two matches.
The teenager’s consistency and athleticism should prove decisive, but Chwalinska can keep the contest close and stay within the 5.5-game handicap.
Alternative Bet – Maja Chwalinska Over 8.5 Games Won @ 5/6
The odds would suggest this is going to be a comfortable win for the Russian, but Chwalinska has the game to cause Andreeva problems.
These two have never met on the WTA Tour before and that could be to Chwalinska’s advantage due to her unique style.
She is left-handed and uses more slice backhands than any player in the WTA Top 150.
The slice could really disrupt Andreeva’s rhythm because she prefers to step in and dominate with her powerful forehand.
Sustaining pressure over two sets against Andreeva’s depth and precision will be a tall order, but Chwalinska can certainly make her presence felt and reel off a few games in a row.
Therefore, it is probably worth backing the Pole to win at least nine games in the match.
Chwalinska has served only three aces in her six main draw matches and they all came in her third-round win over Maria Sakkari.
The Pole prefers placement over power and looks unlikely to be able to outfox Andreeva on service.
Her first service games in both her last wins went to deuce with Anna Kalinskaya breaking her in the opening game of the quarter-final and Shnaider taking her to deuce twice at the start of the semi.
Andreeva certainly has the weaponry to win three points on Chwalinska’s serve and it may be a common feature of this final.
Take the Polish player to claim a set on Saturday to give the odds of this Bet Builder a boost.
She has proven capable of confounding expectations throughout the event and can capitalise on any loss of focus from her younger opponent.
