There is an all-British affair to look forward to in the opening round in Nottingham as Harriet Dart meets her higher-ranked compatriot Katie Boulter and it could be quite the battle.
Boulter was once ranked as world number 23 and, while she has slipped down to 56th in the rankings, she enjoyed a return to form with her semi-final run at Queen’s Club last time out.
Boulter was no match for eventual champion Donna Vekic in her last-four rumble but she had stunned world number two Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals and is clearly in fine fettle.
Dart suffered a second-round exit at Queen’s, upsetting Liudmila Samsonova before losing to Kamila Rakhimova, and she will be hoping for a more productive spell in Nottingham.
However, Dart did come from a set down to beat Boulter in the second round on the hallowed turf at Wimbledon in 2024 and that same season they did battle in Nottingham, with Boulter winning 6-7 6-4 7-5.
Best Bet - Three sets @ 13/8
Alternative Bet - Katie Boulter to win 2-1 @ 3/1
Bet Builder - Katie Boulter to win, 12+ double faults in the match & 5+ aces for Harriet Dart @ 15/2
Best Bet: Three sets @ 13/8
These two British players know one another’s game extremely well, having met five times with Boulter showing why she is the higher ranked performer with victory in three of those rivalries.
However, the last two meetings went to a deciding set and both of those clashes came on grass, one at this venue two years ago.
Boulter battled to a three-set success on that occasion but just a month later Dart came from a set down to triumph 4-6 6-1 7-6 at Wimbledon.
That shows that they could be evenly matched on a surface that plays to both of their strengths and backing the showdown to go to a deciding set could be the approach to take.
Five of Dart’s last six matches have featured all three sets, including her two matches at Queen’s club recently, while five of Boulter’s last seven matches have gone the distance.
Alternative Bet: Katie Boulter to win 2-1 @ 3/1
Boulter has won three of her five meetings with Dart and her recent semi-final run at Queen’s Club suggests that she has rediscovered her peak form at the perfect time.
A successful Wimbledon will be the objective for Boulter but she will want to challenge for silverware in Nottingham, where she is a two-time champion having taken the title in 2023 and 2024.
Boulter will want to get back to that level and there was a lot to like about her performances at Queen’s, where her list of victims included Leylah Fernandez and world number two Rybakina.
A reproduction of those efforts should see her too strong for Dart, who has lost six of her last seven matches on the grass.
Boulter, on the back of a semi-final run at Queen’s, should have too much quality for Dart.
However, Dart is strong on serve and could have five or more aces. The Brit had nine aces across her two matches at Queen’s.
There could be plenty of double faults in a tight heat, though, with both players likely to feel some nerves.
When these two met at Wimbledon two years ago there were 21 double faults while their clash before that at Nottingham featured 11 double faults.
