'I would do it': Steven Gerrard responds to Liverpool return rumours

Steven Gerrard has addressed rumours regarding a potential return to Liverpool amid speculation that Arne Slot's job is at risk.

Few could have anticipated any uncertainty regarding Slot's future less than a year on from Liverpool's 2024/25 Premier League triumph, but a severe drop-off has cast doubt on whether the Dutchman will still be in charge for the start of the 2026/27 season.

More recent reports suggest that the club remain firmly behind Slot, despite suggestions that Xabi Alonso is set to take over in the summer, but, as we know, things change quickly in football and it'd be naive to rule out a managerial change in the not-too-distant future.

Steven Gerrard has been amongst the names mooted to take over on an interim basis in the event that Slot is dismissed before the end of the season, and he addressed rumours of a Liverpool return when accompanying Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott on The Overlap.

Speaking on a potential return to the club as first team manager, he said:

"I've got a brilliant connection with the club. I always have, and probably a stronger connection since I left. They've always been unbelievable.

"Any help or area I could help the club in, I'd always try and do it if I could. I suppose what you want to know is do I want to manage Liverpool at some point in my life? Of course, that'd be a dream.

"Would I be ready for it right now to take it over a period of time? Probably not."

When questioned on whether he would take the assistant manager role at his former club, he answered:

"It depends who it is (which manager is in charge) and how the conversation goes. Does he need me? What hoes he think I can offer?

"I would do it for Liverpool Football Club. If I was asked, and they felt that I was the right man to do it, I'd be up to it. Of course."

The Liverpudlian's managerial journey has not been plain sailing, enduring difficult tenures with Aston Villa and Al Ettifaq after an impressive three-year spell with Rangers, where he delivered the clubs 55th Scottish Premiership title.

Gerrard is yet to return to management since parting ways with the Saudi Arabian outfit in January 2025, and it remains to be seen as to whether he wishes to take a first team role in the near future.
