Steve Tandy names 39-man Wales squad for November's Nations Championship fixtures

Steve Tandy has named his 39-man Wales squad for their Nations Championship fixtures this November, with a number of high-profile players omitted.

The Red Dragons had an inconsistent start to the all-new Nations Championship, opening their account with a win over Fiji, before losing comfortably to both Argentina and South Africa.

As a result, Wales currently sit fifth in the Northern Hemisphere table and - as things stand - they would face Japan in their respective finals match on the final weekend of the competition.

As Tandy looks to continue to build his side ahead of next year's Rugby World Cup, the Wales head coach has named a youthful squad for November's fixtures.

Tandy has named three uncapped players for the fixtures this Autumn, with Cardiff's Rhys Barratt, as well as Dragons duo Che Hope and Aneurin Owen named in their first senior international squads.

Gloucester hooker Dewi Lake, who has played a leading role in the Cherry and White's ressurgence this term, captains the side, joined in the squad by his club-mates Jac Morgan and Max Llewellyn, in what is a Prem heavy squad.

In total, 13 of the 39 players named currently ply their trade across the border in England's top flight, highlighting the recent struggles and exodus within Welsh club rugby.

Aaron Wainwright, who is part of an all-Wales back row at Prem outfit Leicester Tigers, is joined in the squad by teammate Gabriel Hamer-Webb, but there is no room in the squad for his partners Olly Cracknell or Tommy Reffell.

Louis Rees-Zammit is also among those named in the squad, with the Bristol Bears winger now fully established back in rugby union, following his stint in the NFL.

Scarlets centre Macs Page, who has reportedly received an offer from Munster and would be eligible to play for Ireland, is another eye-catching omission, pointing to what could be yet another blow for Welsh rugby.

In a statement on Wales' website, Tandy said: “It’s great to welcome back the players who were unavailable for the first three rounds of the Nations Championship."

"Added to that, there are a number of players who’ve been in great form for their clubs and so we wanted to give them an opportunity in the squad this autumn."

“We’re excited to head into our three home rounds of the competition. Principality Stadium is a special place to play and means an awful lot to the players. When we assemble as a group next week all eyes will be on that first home fixture against Japan and preparing well to put in a good performance for the fans" he continued.

Wales end their Nations Championship campaign with home fixtures against Japan, New Zealand and Australia in Cardiff, before facing off against their finals weekend opponents at Allianz Stadium Twickenham.
