Australian sport's greatest rivalry returns for another thrilling instalment as Queensland Maroons take on New South Wales Blues in the 2026 State of Origin.
The State of Origin is a best-of-three Rugby League series featuring players from the two eastern states, and is considered to be among the most popular sporting events in Australia.
With a storied history running back more than four decades, the State of Origin sees the Blues and Maroons battle annually for sporting glory.
Queensland hold the current bragging rights after their series victory in 2025, their third in the last four editions of the rivalry.
This year however the Blues are fancied to buck the trend and achieve victory over the Maroons, something they have only done twice so far this decade.
Ahead of the beginning of the 2026 State of Origin series, New South Wales are favoured to prevail and secure an 18th title.
New South Wales Blues head coach Laurie Daley has named a revamped squad in pursuit of revenge for their series loss against the Maroons in 2025.
Queensland hold the better overall record in the State of Origin to date, recording 25 wins against the Blues' 17 since the inaugural series in 1982.
Home advantage has been something of a curse in the State of Origin in recent years, with no host team recording a victory on home soil since 2023.
That win came for the Blues at the Accor Stadium, and the monster 80,000 seat venue in Sydney is the location for the opening fixture for the 2026 series, where Daley's men will be looking to respond after closing out the 2025 series with back-to-back losses against the Maroons.
The stats don't make happy reading for the Blues however and Sydney has proved an unhappy hunting ground in the past; NSW have lost all four of their series openers in the state capital.
Momentum and history favour Billy Slater's Maroons side, however the series opener represents a clean slate and an opportunity for both sides to lay down a marker ahead of the upcoming trips to Melbourne and Brisbane.
Blues legendary halfback Nathan Cleary is the favourite to win his first Wally Lewis Medal in 2026, closely followed in the betting by the returning James Tedesco, who won the award in 2019.
Other names in contention are Maroons fullback Kalyn Ponga, teammate Harry Grant and NSW captain Isaah Yeo.
Blues winger Brian To'o is the current favourite to be Top Tryscorer in the 2026 State of Origin.
The 27-year-old topped the scoring charts in the 2025 series with five, and the Samoan star has gone over 11 times since his NSW debut in the 2021 series.
Other contenders include Blues and Tonga's Tolutau Koula, who is making his series debut, Queensland's Selwyn Cobbo, who scored two tries in the 2023 series, and Blues iconic fullback Tedesco, who has been recalled for his tenth State of Origin series.
