Sunderland could reportedly turn to one of Regis Le Bris' coaching team if results do not improve at the Stadium of Light.
Journalist Alan Nixon has reported that former Portugal centre-back Jose Fonte could step in if the club's hierarchy decide to part ways with Le Bris.
Fonte moved to Tyneside in the summer after agreeing to join the backroom staff ahead of the new season.
He only ended his playing career at the end of last season after choosing not to extend his stay at Portuguese side Casa Pia.
The 42-year-old is best known for his time at Southampton where he made 288 appearances over an eight-year spell which saw the Saints rise from League One to the Premier League.
Fonte also represented Crystal Palace and West Ham United during his time in England, while he also made 50 appearances for Portugal.
It remains to be seen whether Fonte would be an interim or a potential solution, but it is becoming increasingly clear that Le Bris needs to pick up some results.
On the surface, any decision to remove Le Bris would feel harsh given his achievements at Sunderland.
After winning promotion from the Championship, the Black Cats returned to the Premier League in style as they secured European football last season.
However, things have not gone to plan this time around with the club languishing at the bottom of the table and four points from safety.
