Sonay Kartal's superb return from injury scaled new heights as the Briton beat Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 7-6 at the Wuhan Open to reach the first WTA 1000 final of her career.
Kartal had been sidelined for six months due to a debilitating back issue which saw the former world number 44 plummet down the WTA rankings to 170.
Given her lengthy lay-off, it would have been natural for the 24-year-old to make a low profile return to competitive tennis, but not Kartal. She instead made her return at last week's China Open and used her protected injury ranking to enter the final WTA 1000 tournament on the 2026 calendar in Wuhan, eager to test herself against the world's best players.
Dispatching Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets in the opening round, Kartal claimed her first major scalp of the week with a 6-0 7-5 drubbing of ninth seed and 2020 Olympic champion Belinda Bencic.
Kartal, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last year, then dispatched 15th seed Jasmine Paolini in ruthless fashion, dropping just two games on her to way booking a quarter-final ticket.
2026 Italian Open champion Svitolina awaited the Briton in the last eight and the Ukrainian provided a far sterner test than her previous opponents, but Kartal demonstrated her tenacity and resilience to prevail 6-2 2-6 6-4 and claim the biggest win of her career.
Former French Open champion Ostapenko was up next for Kartal and the Briton somehow came from behind in both sets to break new ground by winning two dramatic tiebreaks.
We've looked at the prize money and ranking points Kartal has earned so far at the Wuhan Open.

The winner of the Wuhan Open will receive a cheque for $665,000.
Kartal's brilliant run at the Wuhan Open means she will return to the top 50 of the WTA Rankings.
Finalists in WTA 1000 tournaments receive 650 ranking points for their efforts, while the champion takes home 1,000 ranking points.
Ahead of her semi-final meeting with Ostapenko, Kartal was projected to climb 83 places to world number 87.
Already guaranteed to become the new British number two behind Katie Boulter, Kartal is expected to climb to world number 50, and then even higher, if she manages to win Sunday's final.
