Shubman Gill's 430 breaks record for most runs scored by an Indian in a Test match

Shubman Gill has broken the record for the most runs scored by an Indian batter in a Test match, with 430 in the second Test against England.

Considering all the greats to have donned the whites for India - Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar (whose record was broken by Gill), and all the rest - it's a remarkable achievement for the 25-year-old, who inherited the captaincy from Rohit Sharma just last year.

Only four men in the history of Test cricket had scored 400 runs in a Test - Graham Gooch, Mark Taylor, Kumar Sangakkara and of course Brian Laram who managed his in one innings - with Gill joining them, ranking second behind only Gooch and becoming the only player to score a double century and 150 in the same Test.

With India 211/5 in the first innings at Edgbaston, Gill put on a stand of 203 with Ravi Jadeja, eventually falling for 269 to put the tourists in a strong position.

With England desperately chasing wickets in the second innings, anybody thinking Gill was due an off day was sorely mistaken.

Coming to the crease with India 96/2, Gill cruised to a 129-ball century before eventually falling for 161 after being caught and bowled by Shoaib Bashir.

It's worth keeping in mind Don Bradman's record for the most runs in a series - 974 - which Gill is now within sight of. Under Ben Stokes's stewardship, pitches have tended to be very batting-friendly, and there's every chance we see the India skipper raise his bat again.

Despite an underwhelming start to his Test career, averaging less than 30 across his first 20 innings, Gill has progressed into one of the world's premier players, and in three Tests this year against Australia and England, has two centuries and a double century.
