Sheffield Wednesday face competition from Europe in race for Everton defender

It is a summer of change at Sheffield Wednesday this year, with a rebuild on the cards under their new owners and a positive energy around the club at long last.

Transfer links have come and gone in their numbers as the Hillsborough club look to recruit players with enough quality to help them return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Such was the exodus while the club were owned by Dejphon Chansiri, the Owls could also do with bulking out their squad further with young talent that can progress into Championship level footballers.

One name being touted for this is Everton's Reece Welch - according to Pete O'Rourke with FootballInsider.

Welch's contract with the Toffees expires at the end of June, with the club confirming he won't be offered a new one and can leave on a free.

Sheffield Wednesday, Freiburg and Danish club Horsens all sounded out moves for the centre-half, though Freiburg's interest has since cooled.

Horsens secured their return to the top flight of Danish football last season, finishing second in the First Division, and have featured in the UEFA Europa League once in their history back in the 2012/13 season, where they lost to Sporting CP in the play-off qualifying round.

While the Danish side have pedigree, Owls fans will be hoping that the allure of an iconic, historic English club looking to return to their former glory under new stewardship should be too much for Welch to turn down in favour of a move abroad.

The 22-year-old made three appearances for the Everton, two as a substitute in the FA Cup and a start in the EFL Cup - a 1-0 win over Fleetwood.

He does have plenty of experience of being in and around a Premier League matchday squad though, having been on the bench for 23 games in his time at the Merseyside club, who he joined when he was 11.

Huddersfield-born Welch spent time in League Two when on loan at Forest Green Rovers in the first half of the 2023/24 season, featuring 23 times as they finished bottom of the division and were relegated. Just 19 at the time, he will have gained plenty of experience from a tumultuous season such as that.

A player with promise, he has also featured in the England youth setup, appearing for every age group between the U16s and U20s, though with no senior appearances he is still eligible for Jamaica too.

Welch can start negotiating deals with interested clubs now ahead of a move following his contract expiry, so it will be intriguing to see how keen both clubs are to get a deal wrapped up early.
