Rob Edwards tipped to succeed Pierre Sage as next Crystal Palace manager

Rob Edwards has been mooted as a potential successor to Pierre Sage at Crystal Palace as the Frenchman's position comes under increasing scrutiny.

A 5-0 hammering to fierce rivals Brighton has piled the pressure on Sage following a difficult start to his tenure in SE25 after taking over from Oliver Glasner in the summer.

The former RC Lens boss has been given the vote of confidence by the Palace board despite concerns about the team's defensive frailties, with the Eagles shipping the most goals in the Premier League so far: 17 from seven matches.

Although Sage has two wins to his name in England's top-flight, performances have also left plenty to be desired and club chairman Steve Parish is reportedly considering a change if results do not improve.

Tension between Sage and Parish have been rife since the summer transfer window when Palace failed to secure the manager's priority targets to replace Maxence Lacroix in central defence, and there's a sense that the Frenchman has been undermined as he doesn't possess the tools to fulfil his objectives.

If Sage is sacked, Kieran McKenna and Thomas Frank have both been mentioned as potential contenders to take over at Selhurst Park, but Edwards' name has been thrown into the ring given his relationship with the club's sporting director Matt Hobbs.

Edwards worked with Hobbs during his tenure at Wolves before the latter accepted the role at Palace to replace Dougie Freedman as sporting director, and former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes that their rapport could lead to Edwards taking charge of the Eagles.

"It does seem that Edwards is one of the leading candidates for the Crystal Palace job," Brown told Football Insider.

"He's got this relationship with the sporting director from their time at Wolves together, so that's already one point in his favour and likely why he is in the running.

"I've been told he's a good character, Edwards, he's very well-liked and he doesn't find it difficult to get the players on side, so that could be another positive for him.

"It depends what sort of manager and what sort of experience Crystal Palace are looking for, because there will obviously be other managers on their list as well."

Edwards has been out of work since his acrimonious departure from Wolves in June.

The former Forest Green and Luton Town boss inherited a sinking ship at Molineux and was unable to preserve Wolves' Premier League status, but Edwards had already made preparations for the Championship campaign and was influential in the signings of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez.

Wolves decided to cut ties with Edwards and appoint Cesar Peixoto, who had spent his seven-year managerial career in Portugal before making the switch to the West Midlands in the summer.
