Revealed: The extent of Conor McGregor's knee injury from UFC 329

Conor McGregor has revealed the suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in his rematch against Max Holloway last weekend.

McGregor returned to the Octagon for the first time in five years at UFC 329 on 11 July in a rematch against the former featherweight champion.

In his previous outing the Irishman had suffered a serious leg injury in his trilogy with Dustin Poirier that required extensive surgery and threatened to end his career.

Ahead of his fight with Holloway McGregor insisted that he had made a full recovery and detailed his aim to return to the top of the UFC where he became the promotion's first-ever simultaneous two weight world champion.

At the opening bell at the T-Mobile Arena he immediately pressed forward and threw a jumping switch kick, then seemed to land awkwardly on his right knee.

It soon became apparent that he had suffered a serious injury as he struggled to remain standing, and following protestations to the referee from Holloway, the bout came to an anticlimactic end after just 69 seconds.

Following the fight the 38-year-old underwent scans and he revealed on social media on Sunday the full extent of his injury.

"It was acl and meniscus." McGregor wrote.

"It is the same injury as the first Holloway fight, only this time the opposite leg. Quite shocking. I returned to competition within 9 months to fight Diego Brandao back then."

He added that he hopes to return to the cage in the summer of 2027 - in a bout that would mark the end of his current UFC conract.

He continued: "With today’s regenerative medicine advancements and improved training methods it is well within my realm to return by next summer.

"I am walking without a crutch. I done leg extension machine work the other day to no issue. So I can walk without aid, and activate my quad under resistance. All very positive.

"I am maximum discipline and have maintained it fully since the bout. I wonder was I saved from something worse here. I believe so.

"I would have attended the after party as “the man” and who knows then. I believe I was saved.

"Thank you God! On we go, no sad stories. Thank you for the support and well wishes everyone, your health is your wealth."
