For all McGregor's success inside the Octagon, the metric in which he most separates himself from his contemporaries is that of fighter pay.

The 'Notorious' holds multiple pay-per-view and gate records in the UFC, and made history when he stepped into the boxing ring to take on Floyd Mayweather in the summer of 2017.

By contrast, when McGregor and Holloway first met inside the cage 13 years ago on the preliminary portion of a UFC event broadcast on cable TV in the US.

On that night over 14,000 people packed the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts as the two burgeoning prospects faced off in the sixth bout of the night on a card headlined by a light heavyweight clash between Chael Sonnen and Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua.

McGregor ultimately got the better of Holloway in their first encounter, and with the event taking place in Boston, the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission released the payouts that both men received for the fight.

Conor McGregor took home $24,000 for beating Holloway in their first encounter, with that figure including a $12,000 win bonus. Meanwhile Holloway was paid $14,000 in a losing effort.

The fight was just McGregor's second in the UFC, and represented a small bump in pay from his debut earlier that year when he earned a $20,000 base for his first-round KO of Marcus Brimage, with an additional Knockout of the Night bonus that was immortalised by his post-fight "Dana, 60 Gs, baby!" line.

A lot has changed in the more than a decade that has passed since their first fight, and it's not unreasonable to expect that both McGregor and Holloway will take home more this weekend than every fighter on that card did combined in 2013.

How much will Conor McGregor earn for fighting Max Holloway at UFC 329?

It's been five years since Conor McGregor last stepped into the Octagon when he suffered a devastating leg break in his trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier.

In the intervening promotion the sport has undergone one of the most seismic changes since its inception in 1993, with their $7.7billion deal with Paramount marking the end of the pay-per-view era in the lucrative US market.

From UFC 324 in January onwards fans in the US have been able to watch all events for as little as $8.99 a month, rather than the $74.99 fans had to fork out to watch a single event.

While the move away from PPV has been viewed as a positive for fans, it is expected to have had major ramifications for fighters like McGregor whose contract was heavily incentivized based on the number of pay-per-views sold.

Prior to his return being announced McGregor had even suggested that the new broadcast era had made his contract void, and that the two parties would need to renegotiate before he would step back into competition.

As such, it's hard to get an accurate baseline on what McGregor might take home this weekend, but based on recent negotiations Jon Jones made public with the promotion it stands to reason that McGregor will receive somewhere in the region of $20million to $25million for his UFC 329 main event.

What will Max Holloway earn for fighting Conor McGregor at UFC 329?

One of the most exciting fighters ever to step into the cage, Saturday night will mark Max Holloway's 33rd fight in the UFC.

That puts him joint 10th in promotional history, and a win against McGregor could see him move to third in the list for most wins inside the Octagon.

Throughout his career Holloway has earned 13 post-fight bonuses, totalling more than $1.2million throughout his career - with his UFC 300 victory over Justin Gaethje seeing him take home $600,000 in bonuses alone as he awarded both Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night honours.

The last time Holloway fought under the jurisdiction of an athletic commission that discloses fighter payouts was all the way back in 2019 when he fought in a losing effort to Dustin Poirier in Atlanta, Georgia.

That night the Hawaiian is said to have taken home a $350,000 base payout, though it is worth noting that these figures do not always take into account additional so-called 'locker room bonuses'.

For a fight of this magnitude it is expected Holloway will receive a career-best payout, and while details are not expected to be publicly disclosed, estimates suggest he will take home somewhere in the region of $5-10million for his fight with McGregor.
