Florentino Perez stole the headlines with his appearance on Spanish TV show Horizonte on Thursday by claiming he will bid €150million for a mystery player if he is re-elected as Real Madrid's club president.
Perez is going head-to-head with Enrique Riquelme ahead of Sunday's presidential election where the club's 95,000 registered members will decide on who they want to lead a new chapter at Real Madrid.
While his challenger Riquelme promised the arrivals of Manchester City duo Erling Haaland and Rodri should he win the election, Perez opted to tease viewers by confirming he will sign a new "Galactico" if he remains in power at the Santiago Bernabeu.
After confirming that both Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries will join the La Liga giants, the 79-year-old delivered a series of riddles about who his star signing might be.
“I’m going to make an offer to a Champions League club soon which will be the biggest payment Real Madrid would have made for a player in their history, €150m at least," Perez said.
“It’s not [Jeremy] Doku. It’s not [Erling] Haaland. It’s not [Harry] Kane. The €150m bid will not be for Michael Olise. Great player but it’s not him."
Perez continued with further clues: “The €150m deal is not for a defender. It could be midfielder or forward. He is a young player. And he is not from the Premier League.
"The bid will be for a Cristiano Ronaldo or Kaká level player. He’s a Galactico!"
Perez added that if he is re-elected, the club-record bid will be sent next Tuesday. Presenters of the show, 'El Hormiguero', pushed back on Perez's suggestion that the mystery player will be a forward by highlighting Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior being on Real's books, to which Perez replied: "In Madrid, you always need more".
With great intrigue around Perez's mystery €150m player, we've broken down the clues and assessed who he might be referring to.
Young? Check. Forward or midfielder? Check. Plays for a UEFA Champions League club that's not in the Premier League? Check. Will command a fee of €150m? Check.
Musiala is certainly of Galactico material following a breathtaking start to his career with Bayern Munich. A five-time Bundesliga winner and UEFA Champions League victor, Musiala's scored 69 goals and registered 45 assists in 231 appearances for the Bavarian giants, but his influence at the Allianz Arena wades far deeper than his productivity.
The 23-year-old starred for Germany at Euro 2024 and is likely to play a key role in Julian Nagelsmann's plot for World Cup glory this summer.
Depending on how Jose Mourinho plans to line-up, Real Madrid are arguably crying out for a natural ten. Jude Bellingham excelled in the position under Carlo Ancelotti, but the England star may be utilised as an eight under Mourinho.
Arda Guler provides adequate back-up and Brahim Diaz's versatility is useful, but an ingenuitivie ten like Musiala could be the one to link Madrid's attacking talent in harmony.
Musiala's contract expires in 2030 and reportedly contains a €175m release clause which decreases after each year.
Paris Saint-Germain have a number of players that Real Madrid would probably like to get their hands on after the club's back-to-back UEFA Champions League successes, and Desire Doue is undoubtedly one of them.
With pace, agility and flair in abundance, Doue is the mould of player that Real Madrid supporters worship and there is an obvious void on the right flank with Rodrygo sidelined until the end of the calendar year.
Doue is under contract with PSG until the summer of 2029 and Les Parisiens will want to make a substantial profit on the €50m outlay to acquire his services from Rennes in August 2024.
Imagine a front three of Doue, Mbappe and Vinicius Jr? On paper, it's insanely terrifying.
On the opposite flank of Enrique's all-conquering Paris outfit is the obscenely talented Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
In terms of Perez's clues, is 25 years old considered to be young? Regardless, Kvaratskhelia has Galactico in his veins.
The Georgian admitted his footballing idol when growing up was a Real Madrid player, although to the surprise of many it wasn't Cristiano Ronaldo or Zinedine Zidane: it was Guti. Even Kvaratskhelia's agent, Mamuka Jugeli, revealed his client loves Real Madrid.
PSG have Kvaratskhelia tied down until 2029 after paying €70m to lure him from Napoli in January 2025.
A Scudetto winner, the winger has excelled since moving to the French capital and shone on the UEFA Champions League stage last season, scoring 10 goals and registering seven assists to inspire PSG to continental glory.
The obvious issue is that Kvaratskhelia's favoured position would see him rival Vinicius Jr on the left flank, but the former Dinamo Tbilisi ace has demonstrated under Enrique he's capable of fulfilling roles as a second striker or right winger to great effect.
