Akin to the Holy Grail of golf, 59 represents the sport's magic number.
Remarkably, it's a number that wasn't posted for 14 years after Al Geiberger become Mr. 59 in 1977. Geiberger was only -2 through his first five holes before going birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie in his next seven, holing out with a wedge for his eagle. After two more pars, Geiberger birdied three of his final four holes to card a 13-under-par round of 59, the first on the PGA Tour.
Fourteen years later, Chip Beck became the second man to break 60 at the Las Vegas Invitational, with 13 birdies and five pars, with David Duval achieving the feat in memorable fashion at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.
Duval's was the first to come in the final round of a tournament and was one of the best rounds of golf in PGA Tour history. While most rounds of 59 require a red-hot putter, the longest putt Duval made that day was 10 feet, with nine of his approach shots finishing no further than five feet from the hole.
Jim Furyk became the sixth player to shoot 59 on the PGA Tour in 2013 and then became the first player to break 60 twice and the first player to shoot 58 at the Travelers Championship in 2016. After an opening par, Furyk went birdie, eagle, birdie, holing out from 135 yards for his eagle, then birdieing seven straight holes to get to -11 through 12. Furyk needed to play the final six holes in even par to break 60, but his birdie on 16 saw him become the first player to shoot 58 on the PGA Tour.
Jake Knapp was the most recent player to break 60 on the PGA Tour, shooting 59 at the Cognizant Classic in 2025.
